What is Windows?

Windows is an operating system.  An operating system is a software program that controls and runs everything on your computer.  Windows controls your hardware (printer, mouse, keyboard, etc.), organizes your files, and runs your software programs.  Think of Windows as an orchestra conductor who makes sure all the parts of your computer – your hardware and programs – work together.

What are Windows versions?

Microsoft is always working to upgrade and improve the Windows operating system.  The first Windows version that was ready for the internet was Windows 95.  That version was replaced a few years later by Windows 98, then came Windows 2000 and ME (Millennium Edition).  These operating systems were replaced by Windows XP, released in 2002.  Microsoft then released two versions within a couple of years – Windows Vista and Windows 7.  Most computers purchased between 2007 and 2009 run Windows Vista.  Computers purchased since 2009 will run Windows 7.
